Fun and Culture Events in Beijing
 The FC Club (Fortune Connection Club) is one of China's oldest networking organizations. It serves a rapidly growing community of over 10,000 active members in Shanghai and over 5,000 in Beijing. The FC Club is dedicated to bringing together business professionals, business managers, expatriates, human resource managers, and headhunters for its monthly events. We run a diverse programme of monthly Social Networking Evenings. The programme includes Career Development – Headhunter Evenings, Media Evenings, Business & Financial Evenings, I.T Evenings and more all on a regular basis.
The FC Club was founded in 2002 and is recognized as being one of the major hubs of connectivity. FC Club members are typically in their late 20's to early 50's. They are highly educated and motivated individuals. Many of them are the most active mid-career, international professionals in their respective communities. People often also attend the events for purely social reasons – to meet old friends and to make new friends. A very special festive networking evening with prizes and surprises. In addition to valuable Lucky Draw prizes, there was a goody bag for all, live music, spot prizes, slide show of pictures from all the events of 2009, pizza, drinks and Santa.
At times we thought this evening would have to be cancelled! Ten days before the event we were told by the Prosper Center that the Westside Bar had been closed for renovation. After frantic phone calls and an emergency site visit we transferred the event to the Prosper Center's Napoli Terrace.
Registration for the event was slow and based on the normal registration pattern on Friday we estimated an attendance of about 60 people. However, on Monday there was a rapid spate of registration and the event itself was attended by just over 120 people, double the initial estimate.
These Fashion, Media and Creative Industry Networking Evenings have become very popular. This particular evening included people from CCTV, BJTV, Fashion TV, CRI, Hollywood, Professional Photographers, Models, Actors and Talent and Modelling Agencies. The new Zeta Bar team were very helpful and attentive and resulting in a spectacular evening.
The last Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening of 2009 proved once again the popularity of the venue and the theme. During the course of 2009 we held eleven events at Flames all of them were well attended and, to date, we have only had positive feedback from the participants about this particular venue. It will remain on our list of venues for 2010.
A highly successful Fashion, Media and Creative Industries Social Networking Evening. The Prosper Centre were so delighted with the both the high attendance and the quality of the participants that they have offered all sorts of special arrangement, for our 22 Dec Festive Networking Evening.
These Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evenings continue to draw a large number of participants. They attend because they know that it's who you know that knows you know and at the FC Club they can now and be known by the right people.
A new venue always arouses interest and this, our first networking event at the Westside Bar, proved to be no exception. The venue is a suitable size for our events and the environment very conducive for successful networking. As to be expected as a first time at a new venue there were a few minor technical problems (the sound system for the Lucky Draw was not adequate) but all should be perfect for our next event at this venue which will be the Creative Industries - Consumers event on 24 Nov.
This was scheduled as a lone event since we were not sure how much interest there would be in Creative Industry - Consumer themed networking evenings. It proved to be remarkably popular and was attended by 177 participants, a number far higher than originally anticipated. Consequently, we will organise more of these events (the next one will be on 24 Nov) and if the next few are equally popular then this them will become a regular feature.
The October Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening was very well attended. At times we thought the proximity to the recently concluded October National Holiday would adversely affect the number of participants but we were proved wrong with number approaching a new record.
The diversity of the participants showed once again that these events are of interest to both people just starting to move up the ladder and those who are already in senior positions. Great to see so many experienced people willing to mentor the less experienced.
On a personal note we were able to recruit a new photographer and soon, once Picasa in unblocked, we will be able to start uploading pictures from the October events.
26 September: Daytrip Along the banks of the Yongding River to You Zhou.
This trip was part of our Escape Concrete Beijing Series and traced the Beijing section of the Yongding River to its most beautiful gorge located on the Hebei – Beijing border.
This trip was especially reserved for September because the autumn landscape is one of the best.
The trip proved to be very popular with FC Club members and was fully booked.
The day itself was memorable for the fact that it did not rain, the need to implement Plan B and BBQ at an alternate site (because of a traffic accident that blocked the road ahead of us), the interesting villages and the abundant Chinese Dates.
22 Sept: Business, Finance and Global Mobility Social Networking Evening at the Marriott Beijing Northeast
18 Chambers of Commerce had a combined networking event on the same evening but despite that fact this event was well attended with numbers only slightly lower than on average.
In addition to the traditional 9:00pm Lucky Draw our friends from BITE, a lively Beijing theatre group, performed a short scene from their upcoming production of Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize winning play WIT.
This event was the last in our current series of events at the Marriott Beijing Northeast and we thank them for their hospitality and look forward to using again in the not too distant future.
15 Sept: Gain From The Pain
A fascinating evening with Mr. Larry Wang, CEO of Wang & Li Asia Resources followed by Networking.

The topic was "Gain From The Pain: Creating Opportunities And Advancing Your Career In A Downturn" followed by more Networking.
In every difficult economic period, there are always companies and individuals that are able to realize opportunities and accelerate their success. They are able to take advantage of the situation to show their capabilities and ability to perform when others are less able to. Mr. Wang's presentation, Gain From The Pain explained how some manage to excel in their career at a time when most others are losing opportunities.

Larry Wang is the CEO of leading Greater China recruitment and staff development services firm, Wang & Li Asia Resources, which was recently recognized as China's 2008 Recruitment Firm of the Year . He is the author "Know The Game, Play The Game".
8 September: Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening.

The "Summer Hols" are definitely over. Just under 200 people attend this event! The early-bird discount registration was so high that when interviewed by Beijing local radio station 774AM at 5:530 pm on the day of the event we had to ask people NOT to come but to register for the next event.
This event attracted a large number of staff seekers and recruitment companies which is possible a sign that the economic downturn has not just levelled out but is now on the rise and that the companies are now preparing themselves for the expected upturn.
29 August: Daytrip to Qing Liang Gu
We escaped from concrete CBD to Qing Liang Gu (aka Cool Valley) for a day of pure fun. The day included a short walk, a visit to the Pearl Waterfall, rafting and of course a delicious lunch.
The Qingliang Valley (Miyun County) is about 110 kilometres from downtown Beijing. It is characterized by dense pools and spectacular waterfalls. Including the 86 meters high Pearl Waterfall and a huge cave hidden behind the waterfall’s curtain. This was a very relaxing fun day.
26 August: Second Official Beijing Stuff Get-Together
Venue: Hilton Beijing.
An exclusive event dedicated to users of the Beijing Stuff website providing an opportunity for on-line friends to meet in the real world.
25 August: Business, Finance and Global Mobility Social Networking Evening
Venue: Marriott Beijing Northeast.
This special evenings on a monthly basis, bring together Expatriate and English speaking Chinese Entrepreneurs, Businesspeople, Global Mobility Professionals and people who work in Finance, Banking, Consulting, Real Estate, and Investment related industries.
This particular evening was well attended and the feedback was exceptionally good regarding the number of top quality connections that were made.
18 August: "Green Beijing,; A Fantasy or Dream Come True?"
Venue: Westside Cafe, Prosper Center.
The Prosper Center is the only 100% LEED compliant office building in Beijing. All of it's food outlets use organic products. Are we seeing the beginning of a new Beijing? Beijing has often been cited as being heavily polluted. However, the effects of the pre-Olympics pollution free impetus, the no-drive days, the appearance in Beijing of buildings like the Prosper Centre, the growing number of available "green" and "organic" products, the growing use of grey water for flushing begs the question as to whether in the not too distant future Beijing might be Green.
Dr Carey Ma, an ecolonomicsist who has been living and working in Beijing since 2005, spoke about:

11 August Career Development – Headhunter Social Networking Evening.

Despite being the middle of the "Summer Hols" and consequently many familiar faces not being in Beijing this evening was attended by 155 people.
There was a nice mix of ages, experiences, job seekers and staff seekers.
This monthly series of events are constantly popular and achieve their aim in providing a platform for potential career development and/or developing one's career potential.

Countryside Walk from Fragrant Village to Little West Lake.
This ranks amongst my favourite trips. Great people, of course, the weather was perfect, and the walk itself was different. No standard up and down, or up and up, or down and down, but a easy walk interspersed with crossing meandering steams via stepping stones and/or rolling up ones trouser legs and paddling through the at times calf high water. As usual the day included a lunch at a local restaurant that amply provided dishes of local delicacies.
I hope some of the participants will in time send some pictures for me to upload to here.

The second in a new series of events hosted by the Hilton’s Wine Sommelier Julia Zhu and was targeted at people that enjoy the fruit of the vine but are not too sure about what is a good wine and tend to classify wines purely by colour.
The ABC is more then Aroma, Body and Colour and Julia helped us understand the nuances.
We were able to taste 3 quality, award winning California wines from Delicato Family Vineyard.

Black Dragon Pool Scenic Spot is not far from Miyun Reservoir and is about 100KM from downtown Beijing. The 4 Km walk (2.5 hours) contains 18 pools and 3 waterfalls. This deep and serene valley boasts many unique scenic spots each with its own character. The thrill of watching the rushing water and the steep waterfalls make this Dragon Pool trip special. The narrow meandering paths, ladders and bridges provide a sense of adventure and achievement.

14:30 Arrive Chateau Changyu.
The Chateau Changyu brand was first established in 1892 by a Chinese entrepreneur. He is considered to be the earliest Chinese wine maker. During the course of over a century’s development, the brand and its wines have apparently become domestic industry leaders. The Winery includes a Wine Museum and provides an opportunity to bottle ones own wines and to design a suitable label. It goes without saying that the visit includes wine tasting and a chance to purchase wine.

This FC Club Global Mobility, Business and Finance Social Networking Evening was held on Tuesday 23 June from 7:30pm at "The Lounge" Marriott Beijing Northeast.
Attendance was high and many stayed until late.

On Tuesday 16 June 2009 we held our first wine tasting evening. The Hilton Beijing's Chief Sommelier Ms. Julia Zhu was kind us to guise us through the tasting.
We were introduced to three Vistamar Chilean wines. A Sauvignon Blanc, a Cabernet Merlot Rose and a Merlot.

Bring your own packed lunch. We will picnic on the peak about one hour after commencing the walk.

Flames (Hilton Wangfujing) is still very popular with FC Club members as the attendance figures again proved.

This Business and Finance Social Networking Evening was held on Tuesday 28 April at "The Lounge" Marriott Beijing Northeast. This is brand new Marriott (opened on 31 March 2009)very generously provided the FC Club participants with one hour of complimentary drinks. The evening was a great success and I have been told that some very useful contacts were made and that this evening has generated quite a buzz. We look forward to using this venue again in June and July.

This FC Club (Beijing) Dinner and Keynote Speaker Event was held on Tuesday 21 April at the Hard Rock Cafe and the topic was "Secrets of a US Olympic Interpreter"
Our speaker, Mr Andrew Carr, explained why he is a firm believer that necessity is the mother of inventions. At TsingHua University he had to try to balance a study load of remembering over one hundred new Chinese words per day with a gruelling rowing training schedule. The results of his perseverance were medals in national collegiate rowing competition: the development of a unique and effective method for studying the 4 skills of Chinese speaking, listening, reading, and writing; And the position of official interpreter for the US Olympic rowing team.
On Saturday 18 April we intended to escape from the city for a day to enjoy the magnificent Peach blossoms, to meander through the Beijing Grand Canyon, partake of a barbeque and tour and taste the Yanjing Brewery.
A last minute notification from the brewery meant that we had to reverse the order and had to start the day with a tour of the brewery.
This in itself was not a problem, however we were not the only ones with plans to go to see the peach blossoms. Consequently, we encountered Beijing traffic at its worst. The result was the need to juggle the itinerary and to shorten some of the time spent at the various places.
The conclusion was though an extremely nice day.

This Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening was held at Flames, Hilton Wangfujing. Despite some moments of panic regarding the setup arrangements (or lack of them) for this event the Hilton Wangfujing team managed to solve all the problems and provided participants with another impeccable evening.
The event itself was well attended. The effect of the current global crisis is beginning to manifest itself in the increasing number of job seekers.

FC Club Business and Finance Social Networking Evening.
 This Business & Finance Social Networking Evening was held on Tuesday 24 March at the “D” Bar (Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel -北京富力万丽酒店).
The event was remarkably well attended and, based on the feedback received, it is understood to have been a particularly successful in helping people find leads for their various businesses.

FC Club Dinner and Keynote speaker event.
 This Dinner and Keynote speaker was "sold out" and we had to say "No" to non pre-registered participants. The event was held at Tao, a "The Beijinger Restaurant Awards 2009" winner. The four course meal was indeed good but the high number of attendees strained their service to beyond the limit.
Mr Craig Watts spoke about "What you Know" or "Who you Know" when trying to get a job in a China. (A.K.A "The MSN Effect"
Our Dinner and Speaker Series of events are becoming more and more popular and we will need to start using larger venues.

This month's event was also held at Flames (Hilton Wangfujing)one of the most sophisticated gathering places in Beijing.
We had an unusually high attendance of not just job seekers and HR professionals but also very senior managers and directors from various industries. They, as usual, were happy to act as "informal mentors" to the more junior in order to help them develop their careers and paths.

This Business and Finance Social Networking was very well attended. From the feedback that we received we understand that this is becoming (has become ?) one of the most popular monthly evenings and people eagerly await the coming event. This month the participants were especially delighted to discover that the D-Bar was offering our members selected beers at only 12RMB.

Friday 20 February: My Club: Strangers In The Night - Mask and Ask.
 Featuring warm conversation, dance and wine readers of Beijing This Month, FC Club members and friends wore masks to add mystery to their evening.
Ben, a staff member from a Real Estate company said: " This is a very good way to communicate with others and is conducive to social networking. At the party participants can discuss any topic they like and it is more fun and more relaxing with a mask"
As the night drew to a close, strangers no longer, people took off their masks to see waht they could see and to participate in a lucky draw.

Dinner and Keynote Speaker Event – How to Be an Effective Leader in Times of Crisis.
This was the second in our new series of monthly dinner and speaker events. They are obviously of interest since the attendance figure was higher than the previous event. The speaker, Mr Russ Miller,explained Effective Leadership and Human Capital Development based not on the traditional educational and psychological approach but from a business perspective.
The venue, The Punjabi Indian Restaurant, provided a very generous buffet including an unlimited free-flow of beer / soft drinks.
The participants were delighted with both the meal and the speaker and expressed a lot of interest in the coming events.

FC Club Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening.
Last month's high attendance once again showed that this venue is a good choice. It is a large, comfortable and very friendly venue. Unlike some other venues they understand that the purpose of a networking event is to talk with people and they ensure that the background music does indeed remain in the background.
We will be using this venue again in March.

FC Club Business and Finance Social Networking Evening.
This Business and Finance Social Networking Evening brings was held during the middle of the Chinese New Year holiday on the premise that although many non-native Beijingers (foreign and Chinese) will have used the "Golden Week" for travel purposes many would still be in Beijing and would be looking for friendly faces. This evening, as expected, had a far lower attendance than usual (70 people registered) but though that did attend were very glad of the opportunity.
A very special thanks to the team of volunteers that help to staff these events since they once again donated their time to ensure a smoothly organised event.

A Dinner and Keynote Speaker Event
How to Recruit and be Recruited in China
This event was held at the A-Che Cuban restaurant and combined a delicious 4 Course Dinner with a workshop on "How to Recruit and be Recruited in China".
Recruitment experts, Mr. Barak PazTal and Ms. Evelyn Fang lead a 60 minute workshop on China Recruiting challenges, and more importantly, solutions. Recruiters learnt how to effectively use job sites, viral marketing techniques, Matching solutions and email marketing campaigns. Candidates learnt how to ensure that their CVs are getting to the right people and not just being deleted or marked as spam.

FC Club Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening.
After a year of very successful events at the Hilton Beijing’s Zeta Bar this was our first event at the Hilton Wangfujing’s Flames Bar. This new venue is bigger and it proved to be a popular decision.
